with derek valcourt. he is at the scene. he joins us live, via the phone. >>> there is a lot of tension. obviously, a lot of questions for employees of discovery communications who want to know exactly what is going on inside their building. many people were at work around 1:00 this afternoon, when an announcement came over the loud speaker, telling them to make themselves secure in their office. then a massive e-mail went out, at about 1:20, warning them to lock themselves down in their office. if there was some potential danger in the building. another e-mail went out at about 1:52, trying to explain to employees how they would be able to get out. all of the employees were taken up to the top floor of the 7th, 8th, and 9th floor of the building. and then they were all escorted out a fire escape. right now, police are here on the scene. they are briefing the media. i'll have an update for you in just a few moments. >> derek valcourt, reporting live from the phone. the discovery is a very busy section of silver spring. bruce johnson filed this report a short time ago. >>> sittin

holdups she used a note to rob banks in san mateo, santa clara and alameda counties. >> police in oakland announced arrest for three murders that happened over th past month. investigators think these suspects are respsible for the deaths. the most recent crime happened on saturday. the body of a 64-year-old man was wrapped in a ruand dumped on the sidewalk in the city's east side. five days earlier a man was shot in killed on an a. c. terminal in oakland. august 6th a man was killed riding on the back of a bicycle shooting at a group of people. >> firefighters rescued a dog from a burning home outside hayward this morning. h. d. was over the scene on jacob's place as crews battled heavy smoke and flames. investigators sayhey heard popping noises, walked outside and found a garage and car on fire. the resident alerted four others inside and they got out safely. the cause of the fire is under investigatioare scheduled this week for a fremont police officer who was shot and critically injured while on duty. another emergency blood drive will be ld for officer todd young today at santa clara

us live with the latest. >> reporter: well some people have already had their vacation plans interrupted early. from what we know this morning, we know that folks on the north carolina island of ocracoke have been evacuated as well as hatteras island is also being evacuated. now we've learned within the hour. and hurricane earl is now a category three. it has been downgraded but make no mistake about it here, it can still do a lot of damage with winds packing up to 125 miles per hour right now. maryland emergency officials are meeting today about the impact it's expected to have on ocean city. the mayor there said they have about 200,000 people there now leading up to this big labor day weekend. city officials are also warning swimmers about the dangerous riptides there in the water. now here in d.c. they don't expect much from hurricane earl. however, residents are being asked to prepare for power outages and flooding similar to what we have seen during the severe storms lately. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is expected to declare a statewide emergency today. that will giv

which path earl takes. bill karins tracking this storm very closely for us and how does it look right snow. >> the storm weakened from a category 4 to a 3. looks like we're going through another burst of intensification. you can see it right there. a clearing of an eye and that is usually the storm is tightening itself up and the winds will increase slightly during the day today. warm water out ahead of it and we do not expect much more weakening by the time it gets out towards north carolina. the hurricane hunter aircraft is just on its way in. now the next storm, the next hurricane hunter aircraft will be in there probably another three hours from now. until then we'll have to look and get estimates on the satellite of how strong earl is. the wind field 125 mi-mile-per-r winds. as we go into friday, our computer models, we have been watching these closely. when you see the pink line to the right, that would be a hard-glancing blow. the line all the way to the left in the blue would be huge problems. we'll end up with something in the middle and that's what the hurricane foreca
